As far as history goes, the days prior to photography are preserved in something of a mythical image haven. Painted portraits are usually not exact, especially when it was the intention of the painter to flatter more than capture reality, and all those cheap reproductions of famous “faces” into busts, bumper stickers, t-shirts, stickers, coffee cups, and all other manner of paraphernalia for modern consumption, only further the individual ideas we begin to shape regarding the way someone looked.
